Ovega3 history
2003 EnergyBalance® is the worldwide first to produce Omega‐3 fish oil with water soluble vitamin C as food‐equivalent in citrus food concentrate. While others are using mostly synthetic and oil-soluble vitamin E in fish oil. EnergyBalance® is the first to combine (NON synthetic) food‐equivalent vitamin C, a water-soluble vitamin.
Capsules are often made from gelatin. Gelatin is an odorless, colorless, gel-like substance produced by cooking down connective tissue (skin, bones, sinew from animals), which releases the protein mixture that makes up gelatin. Because of the BSE scare, many consumers are reluctant to consume products made from animal bones – like gelatin. That’s why EnergyBalance™ decided in 2010 to use a plant-based capsule made from algae in its Ovega3™ product. The Ovega3™ capsules are made from modified potato starch, are gelatin-free and are purely plant-based.
Many people can’t swallow capsules. In order to help those people, we introduced in 2011 our first liquid Ovega3 vegetarian drink with active and essential omega‐3 fatty acids DHA from algae, 100% renewable plant based vegetarian omega‐3.
In 2019 a new Ovega3 formula comes to the market with plant-based omega-3 DHA+EPA – from the microalgae Schizochytrium sp. – combined with the 3 vitamins B12, D3 and K2 in the active form (MK-7).

Why Omega 3?
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for the human body. Omega-3 influences the viscosity of blood and the development of brain and eyesight in children. The 60% of the retinal lipids and 40% of the polyunsaturated brain lipids, are made of omega-3 fatty acids DHA; the fatty acids reduce the negative effects of arachidonic acid (omega-6), which is normally consumed in excess. Ovega3® contains omega-3 active fatty acids, which are important for our organism and cannot be compared to other fatty acids like, e.g., alpha linolenic acid.
Sustainability with Friends of the Sea certificate
Ovega3™ is environmentally friendly and protects the fish population. EnergyBalance™ uses Friend of the Sea ecologically fish oil from sustainable, certified fisheries for its Ovega3™ product. Friend of the Sea is a non-profit NGO whose job it is to protect marine habitats. Friend of the Sea was founded by Dr. Paolo Bray, the European director of the Earth Island Institute’s Dolphin Project to save the dolphins.
The save the dolphins project has rescued millions of dolphins from death in tuna fish nets, laying the foundation for sustainable fishing practices. Friend of the Sea is an important international organization for the certification of fish from sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.
The organization certifies products from every continent including the most widely traded species of fish and omega-3 fish oil. The fish products and their origin are inspected on site by independent international certification agencies in accordance with the strict Friend of the Sea sustainability criteria. The Friend of the Sea sustainability criteria are based on the FAO guidelines for labeling fish and fish products from deep-sea fisheries as eco sustainable. Only fish species that are not being over-fished are eligible to be certified. The fishing practices must not compromise or destroy the integrity of the ocean floor. The bycatch is not permitted to exceed 8% of the total catch. Friend of the Sea is a participant in the Zero Impact® project. Ecologically certified, sustainable fisheries are supported within the context of community responsibility efforts to reduce annual CO2 emissions contributing to the greenhouse effect. CO2-emissions are compensated for, helping protect forests and support reforestation efforts.
Convenience
Many persons have difficulty in swallowing capsules of a certain size. That’s why we made the Ovega3™ capsules as small as possible. The capsule size of Ovega3® is the smallest on the market. Even though our capsules are small, their content of active omega-3 substances such as EPA and DHA is usually over 70%. This eliminates unnecessary fillers. The capsule-shell from Ovega3® is vegetarian and complies to the standards for Halal and Kosher. In addition, most other capsules are made from gelatine, a colourless and odourless substance obtained by boiling animal connective tissues (skin, bones, tendons).
